Grosseto, Marina di Grosseto and Principina

Grosseto is the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, the provincial capital and a tourist destination of great historical interest. The city is part of an itinerary to discover this much broader region closely linked with the towns of Marina di Grosseto and Principina: two bastions of seaside tourism on the southern coast of Tuscany. Grosseto is first and foremost the shopping capital of the Maremma at via Carducci there are the window-shops of important fashion houses and renowned franchises. The road ends in Piazza Dante Alighieri where the main monuments of the city are located. The first that we suggest to visit is the cathedral of San Lorenzo is its architectural symbol of Grosseto. The church was built in 1294 and over the centuries it has perfectly preserved its artistic identity and its Gothic style. Also on Piazza Dante Alighieri there is also the bust of Leopoldo II known as “II Canapone”, a tribute to the man, symbol of the redevelopment process that the Grosseto area undertook at the beginning of the 18th century which ended with the reclamation of the areas bearing malaria. Another interesting monument to see is Palazzo Aldobrandeschi, the seat of the offices of the province. The building was born by the will of the noble Lombard family whose name it bears, which through its possessions has marked the history of the entire Grosseto area. Another symbolic place of this city are the Medici walls, a masterpiece of sixteenth-century fortification that has come down to us almost totally intact. You can walk most of the walls and visit the Cassero and the bastion of the Fortress, two former military outposts. For those who love history, we also recommend a visit to the Grosseto museums network and in particular to the Archaeological Art exhibition of Maremma located in Piazza Baccarini in the nineteenth-century building of the Old Court. The museum is divided into three different floors each divided into five sections distributed in over forty rooms. This archaeological collection traces all the main historical stages of the Maremma from the man of the caves, to the birth of the Etruscan cities, the Roman conquest through the Middle Ages to finish in the modern age. The largest section of the museum is the one in which objects and documents found in the archaeological site of Roselle fraction of Grosseto are exhibited. This country today sparsely populated and devoid of a real urban structure, in the past was one of the most important cities in the area founded at the end of the Iron Age and conquered by Rome in 294 BC. Grosseto today has the fortune and the merit of ideally being the heir and keeper of his memories.

Grosseto and its beaches: Marina di Grosseto and Principina a Mare It takes ten minutes by car from the center of Grosseto to leave the heat of the city behind and immerse yourself in the clear waters of the Tyrrhenian coast of southern Tuscany. Surrounded by a luxuriant pine forest bordering the Natural Park of Maremma are the seaside resorts of Marina di Grosseto and Principina a Mare, both awarded for years the Blue Flag for their clean beaches and crystal clear sea. If sunbathing is what you aspire to, then the many well-equipped bathing establishments will be right for you, where you can alternate moments of rest with hours of sport including kitesurfing, jet skis, and sailing. Or for those who love direct contact with nature, try their hand at a suggestive walk among the scenic beauties of this land. Marina di Grosseto Marina di Grosseto is also known as the Maremma beach due to the central role played by this locality in the region . The city overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea while behind it is the hilly hinterland dominated by the scrub. In this area there is a natural reserve known as  Pineta del Tombolo which extends from Punta Ala to Parco della Maremma. Marina di Grosseto was originally known with the name of Marina di San Rocco in homage to the patron saint. The city was built in the late 1700s at the behest of Ferdinando III Grand Duke of Tuscany and is characterized by its seaside tourist vocation which began towards the end of the nineteenth century following the conclusion of the reclamation works in the marshy areas. The small beaches that in the past welcomed young people from Grosseto fleeing the summer heat have now become modern structures that allow a varied and complete beach holiday at competitive prices. Another interesting aspect of Marina di Grosseto is its modern soul, here a series of interesting festivals and musical and cultural initiatives are held, much loved and appreciated also by young people. The flagship event of the whole summer season is the historic Tortello Festival in Marina which celebrates the main dish of the Maremma, in the same month, in August, the launch of the lanterns on the Leopoldo II seafront also takes place, a romantic and suggestive ritual much appreciated by tourists.

Principina a Mare Principina a Mare is a beautiful seaside resort located a few kilometers from Grosseto. The city conquers those who visit it thanks to its simple appearance and its gentle soul. Usually the town is very quiet especially in winter while in the summer months it is more lively and animated. The coast south of Principina a Mare is characterized by the classic Maremma wild beaches that penetrate still marshy areas towards the mouth of the Ombrone river. This area is also known by the name of “Padule della Trappola” and is an ideal place for those who love birdwatching given the high number of birds who come to overwinter in this area. In recent years, an itinerary has been inaugurated that allows you to travel on foot or by bicycle in the area that links Principina to the Maremma Park. The city is undoubtedly the ideal place for those looking for a beach holiday in contact with nature but without sacrificing the comforts offered by the city.

I was on vacation with my friends in Marina di Grosseto in July. The town is very pretty but the sea is its real strength. Immense expanses of golden sand, very clean and clear water. Furthermore, in the evening, a lot of very nice parties are held along the sea and the promenade is full of small places where you can enjoy excellent fish and have a beer by the sea! Really nice we will definitely be back!

Grosseto is truly a beautiful city, small, well cared for in every detail. The cathedral of Grosseto is the place that I most appreciated both for its magnificence and for its history. I recommend everyone to visit this city.
