Saturnia and Montemerano

Saturnia is a pretty Maremma village located in the municipality of Manciano on the border with Lazio. Famous all over the world for its thermal baths, Saturnia or Aurinia, as the Etruscans are supposed to call it, is a small town perched on a travertine hill. Along the plain that extends at the foot of Saturnia there is one of the most important spa centers in Italy Terme di Saturnia Golf & Resort inside which is the source of sulphurous water which, coming out of the establishment, originates the Gorello stream from which the waterfalls of the Mill. The date of birth of Saturnia country is a mystery, but according to the Greek historian Dionysius of Halicarnassus the city was founded by the Pelasgians and followed the fate of the nearby Etruscan city of Vulci until 280 BC, the year in which the whole area was conquered. from Rome. The most important testimony of the Etruscan matrix of Saturnia is found in the locality of Pian di Palma where the Puntone Necropolis stands. Inside the site there are twenty tumolo tombs dating back to a period between the seventh and fifth centuries. B.C. The small tombs are characterized by a dromos (access corridor) that ends in the funerary chamber with a rectangular plan and covered in travertine. The excavations revealed vases and various objects exhibited at the archaeological museum of Saturnia. However, most of the monuments present in Saturnia are of Roman origin. Typical is the visit that every tourist makes to Porta Romana from which you enter the town coming from via Clodia an ancient road built at the end of the III, in which according to the stories, you can still see ancient stones the signs of the chariots that for centuries have passed through it. There is little information about medieval Saturnia, dark centuries that make us put our hearts in peace, after which it is necessary to go and look for references to this country in the history of the Aldobrandeschi family, absolute master of the Maremma. The Rocca Aldobrandesca is the most significant one of the medieval parenthesis, built at the end of the twelfth then rebuilt by the Sienese during the fifteenth century. The building as we know it today is the result of the restoration work done by the Ciacci family in 1924. Among the curiosities hidden in the walls of this town, a particular mention deserves the Pietro Aldi cultural center, a museum located in the historic headquarters of Banca Tema which presents a collection of paintings by the famous Manchiano artist pupils of Luigi Mussini at the Institute of Fine Arts of Siena. An eclectic exhibition itinerary in which Pietro Aldi who succeeds in his numerous realistic portraits to restore all the humanity of the nineteenth-century Maremma.

Montemerano: the heart-shaped town Located less than five minutes by car from Saturnia is Montemerano, a medieval town in Etruscan land which is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. The historic center of this town has a particular urban plan due to the presence of a double wall built in two different periods, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, which, seen from above, creates a heart-shaped profile. The highlight of the town is Piazza del Castello located at the highest point of the village and is accessed by passing through a magnificent arch, which in the past was the only access to the town. The tallest building is the ancient residence of the Aldobrandeschi family and then of the Basques and the Sienese vicars and it is here that the municipality of Montemerano was located until its suppression in 1783. A little further down, after piazza del campanile, is the parish church of San Lorenzo is a deconsecrated church converted to civilian use that looks towards Corso Italia the central street that leads to the church of San Giorgio. Along this road is the famous restaurant “Da Caino” which boasts 2 Michelin stars. After passing the arch in all its wonder, the Piazza della Chiesa opens up, a large inclined space in stone, from which the entire Maremma countryside opens up beyond the arches. The church of San Giorgio is of fourteenth-century origin but was consecrated as the plaque at the entrance reminds us in 1430. The building inside is completely covered with frescoes that reveal the perfect layering of the various phases of the church’s decorative process, from the late Gothic ones of the Last Judgment to those made by the Sienese masters who tell the legend of San Giorgio. Every 23 April the inhabitants of Montemerano celebrate this saint and every aspect of the festival revolves around the exploits of the knight Giorgio who after a hard battle managed to kill the very bad dragon that terrorized the town. Less epic, but probably much more realistic is the legend that is told in Montemerano compared to his most extraordinary piece of art kept in the church of San Giorgio the Madonna della Gattaiola. Legend has it that the famous Madonna was painted around 1450 by an artist of the Sassetta school nicknamed Maestro di Montemerano, but the work was a victim of the lightness of the parish priest who used the panel as a door to a barn, the priest to allow the his beloved cat to be able to go out and enter the warehouse freely created a hole in the table. Montemerano is one of the interesting places to visit also for its folklore traditions, from the aforementioned patronal feast dedicated to San Giorgio on April 23, to the colorful Feast of the Witches held every year on the first weekend on horseback with the feast of the dead ( between the end of October and the beginning of November) and celebrates the medieval origins of this village.

I had long wanted to go to Saturnia and in particular to its free spa, and I finally found the opportunity in August. Beautiful as in the picture, perhaps smaller than what I expected but certainly not disappointing! Although there were so many people, we were able to immerse ourselves in peace, the water is warm and pleasant. Positive is the fact that you don't even pay for parking, and these days being able to enjoy such an experience for free is a luxury! Recommended for everyone !!

Known for joining the transmission of the most beautiful villages in Italy Montemerano is a small village characterized by a fairytale and medieval atmosphere. There is a tourist route with the various points of interest explained and contextualized. We liked it very much, leaving there is as if we are back to the sad reality. If in the surroundings it is a must see.

I was on vacation in the Saturnia area and I couldn't help but go to the Cascate del Mulino. One of a kind natural spectacle. She strips you in the car and it's all very Free and natural. If you are looking for comfort, change your seat. Getting by is part of the event. It is nice to move between the pools, the different jets of water with the possibility of becoming natural muds. My envy for those who live nearby.
