Massa Marittima

One cannot fail to speak of Maremma without referring to the queen of the Metalliferous Hills area, the picturesque Massa Marittima, a jewel in the crown of this land. City of art and varied architectural style of great value, from the fabulous Cathedral of San Cerbone, built between the 11th and 13th centuries over an existing church with its unmistakable style, dominates the main square of the town from the top of a staircase . Inside, among the various masterpieces we point out the splendid Arca di San Cerbone di Gregorio dated 1324, the baptismal font of Giroldo da Como from 1297, the Madonna and child from 1316 attributed to Duccio di Buoninsegna. Another symbolic place of Massa Marittima is the Torre del Candeliere, with its emblematic figure, which dominates the skyline of Massa Marittima with its fortified structure adjacent to the Cassero Senese. A tourist place with a personal history, completely different from that of any other village in the Grosseto area, Massa Marittima stands out on the scene for the beauty of its works, but also the lustre conferred on it by the Italian Touring Club which awarded it the prestigious recognition of the Orange Flag. Historical and artistic bulwark of the Maremma, Massa Marittima is a fashionable city with a high tourist vocation full of typical bars and restaurants to which one is led simply by following the scents that are dispersed through its elegant streets. At the Archaeological Museum of Massa Marittima it is possible to admire an incredible exhibition dedicated to the Etruscan world that traces the social evolution of this land through stone sculptures, ancient tools and machinery. The city has an intense and profound relationship with its past which is celebrated with a rich calendar of events including the re-enactment of the Balestro del Girifalco which is held every year on the fourth Sunday of May and 14 August.

Massa Marittima is something indescribable. Every year when I think of Maremma this elegant city comes to mind. The first time I was there I was 18 with my family since then I go back every year at least for a weekend. Superb I recommend it to everyone!

The Cathedral of San Cerbone is located in the historic center of Massa Marittima, very nice to visit with interesting paintings, including "La Maestà" attributed to Duccio di Boninsegna. This building alone is worth the trip to this city!

We have discovered this precious jewel that is Massa Marittima. For the lunch break I chose a beautiful place that has recently opened that offers excellent products for a quality sandwich. Fiocchetto and Piacenza cup, for example, absolutely worth trying. The very kind owner made me taste a young grana cheese, in a beautiful poplar cone, delicious. The club is waiting for permission to have some tables outside, which would help its visibility. We hope to be able to return.

Massa Marittima is a truly beautiful city in the Maremma, walking through its streets rich in history and art is a truly extraordinary experience. The restaurants located in the historic center are also excellent, my advice is to taste the typical dishes of this region which are something incredible!
