Val d'Orcia

Val d’Orcia is one of the scenic wonders of Tuscany which has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2004. This town is located in the province of Siena and represents one of those places where the ancient city-state expressed its maximum potential in architectural and pictorial terms. It is certainly no coincidence that this valley was one of the most celebrated subjects by the painters of the Sienese school that flourished between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, as evidenced by the cycle of frescoes by Ambrosio Lorezzetti an allegory describing the so-called “good and bad effects of the Sienese government “preserved in the majestic Palazzo Pubblico in the city of the Palio. The landscape of the Val d’Orcia is represented by dense vegetation that alternates with long stretches of vineyards and olive groves. The country roads are surrounded by cypresses and along the hills there are also beech and chestnut woods. In this bucolic landscape to dominate the scene there are ancient villages of medieval origin, beautiful rural houses, fortresses and towers that watch over this land. Historically speaking, the fate of the Val d’Orcia has always been linked to that of the Via Cassia, a famous Roman road that connected the capital with northern Italy and which crosses the entire valley. The continuous transit of men and goods has enriched this territory and the inhabited centers that make up this area of Tuscany, arousing the interest of Siena as early as the 15th century AD. Among the most beautiful and important villages of the Val d’Orcia we find: Montalcino, Radicofani, Pienza, San Quirico d’Orcia and Castigline d’Orcia. These five municipalities form the park of Val D’Orcia, the institution set up to protect the landscape and the history of the valley. The potential of this land also goes beyond its nature and art, in fact the Val d’Orcia is also renowned for being the home of some of the most popular gastronomic products throughout Europe such as Pecorino di Pienza, honey from the Val d ‘ Orcia, extra-virgin olive oil from Castiglione d’Orica and Cinta Senese cured meats.

During our vacation in Tuscany we took a tour of the Val d'Orcia, a fantastic place that I recommend to everyone. A real fairytale landscape. Beautiful villages such as Pienza, San Quirico d'Orcia and Montalcino and truly fantastic natural landscapes. It seems to see a painted picture. Meadows with colors ranging from yellow to bright green, with occasional magnificent stone farmhouses, perfect, beautiful with a dirt road bordered by rows of cypresses. the beautiful chapel of Vitaleta, a small church on a meadow with only one or two trees next to it. A tour that represents a real relaxation for the mind in contact with nature.

We toured for 3 days in the Val d'Orcia, having chosen to stay overnight in castel del piano .. from which we left for Montalcino, Pienza, San Quirico d'Orcia, montepulciano .. it was wonderful to travel km and km on regional roads , with almost no one .. but with incredible breathtaking landscapes .. every 5 minutes a break and photos are required !! and all this vast landscape also has little of man-made .. what can I say?!? .. beautiful beautiful .. we do not put photos because we have too much, we will make paintings for our house, we leave you with the desire to go and see with your own eyes the green and yellow meadows, and the farmhouses with their cypress avenues sorted

In April, a sea of green. Each town is beautiful, but the views you see through it are unique. I want to see it again in the summer, after the harvest, to see the same sea turned yellow for the wheat and gray for the clay, after plowing the fields.
