Amiata and its villages

Monte Amiata and its villages Amiata is a complex land that extends between the Val d’Orcia and the southern Maremma, a very varied and beautiful center of life and culture. Monte Amiata has many faces, there are those who go here to ski on its slopes at 1738 meters, those who go to this place to seek a more sincere contact with nature and those who are attracted by the history of its villages Santa Fiora, Arcidosso , Pian Castagnaio and Abbadia San Salvatore. This mountain is also rich in parks to visit such as the WWF Bosco Rocconi Oasis and the Monte Penna Nature Reserve where deer, roe deer, wild boar, hares, and many birds find protection. Located at 1400 meters above sea level, surrounded by beech trees is Indiana Park Amiata, an adventure park of two hectares in which to try out particular routes: the Bike Park is designed for enduro trail enthusiasts, while “aerial” routes are structured for each age range and allow you to “fly” between trees clinging to lianas and to balance on Tibetan bridges that reach up to 12 meters in height. Amiata is also a place where the word relaxation is absolutely not neglected, indeed this mountain is an important spa destination given its volcanic origin. The Bagni di San Filippo with its characteristic limestone deposits are one of the most popular attractions in the area.
The villages of Amiata: the beautiful Santa Fiora Santa Fiora is known as the town of water as it bears the name of one of the most important rivers in the area, the Fiora. Mentioned for the first time in a document dating back to 890 AD, this village has been a domain of the Aldobrandeschi counts since the 10th century. This was the most important possession for the count family who managed to resist for years the numerous attempts of conquest by the Sienese. In 1439 the town passed to the Sforza and in 1633 under the control of Florence. What to see in Santa Fiora The city is located on the southern slope of Mount Amiata, the inhabited area is spread over a trachyte hill and is urbanistically divided into three districts: Castello, Borgo and Montecatino. The castle district is the oldest area of the city in which there is a medieval square dominated by the remains of the ancient Aldobrandesque fortifications, the tower, the scarp bases and the clock tower and the sixteenth-century palace of the Sforza Cesarini Counts. This building is now the seat of the municipality of Santa Fiora and inside there are frescoes from the school of Cavalier D’Arpino. A part of the structure houses the Mercury Mines museum, a careful reproduction of the techniques used in history for the extraction of mercury. Another place that we recommend to visit is the parish church of Santa Flora and Lucilla in which one of the largest collections in the world of “Robbiane” is exhibited, that is the glazed terracotta made by Luca and Andrea della Robbia; a rare example of Florentine art present in a culturally predominantly Sienese territory. Inside the district we recommend going to see the frescoes and the wooden crucifix of 1400 contained in the small church dedicated to Sant’Agostino dating back to the fourteenth century. While in the district of Montecatino, which can be reached by passing the gate of San Michele, there is the sixteenth-century Pescheria di Santa Fiora. It is actually a simple “water collection basin” which was originally used as a trout nursery by the Aldobrandeschi and which later became part of the Renaissance garden park wanted by the Sforza.

The villages of Amiata: Arcidosso Arcidosso is located between the provinces of Grosseto and Siena and its name is mentioned for the first time in a document dated 4 March 1860. The etymology of the name probably derives from the Latin substantives arx and dossum which means fortress and hump. The characteristic village of Amiata, starting from the 12th century, underwent the dominion of the Aldobrandeschi, a noble family of the county of Santa Fiora, who fortified it and built the castle that bears their name. In 1331 the leader Guidoriccio da Fogliano, at the head of the Sienese army, besieged the town, which was eventually annexed to the territories of the Republic of Siena whose dominion lasted until 1559. Arcidosso subsequently passed to the Medici of Florence who appointed a captain of justice. The village also obtained the recognition of the administrative “capital” of Amiata and received the visits of the Grand Dukes Cosimo II in 1612 and Leopoldo II in 1842. In the period of subjection to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany Arcidosso boasted the demographic primacy reaching a population of about 12,000 inhabitants, quadruple the provincial capital Grosseto and in the same years following the constitution of the Italian state the city also became the seat of the Magistrate’s Court. Arcidosso is a place of faith known primarily for the Giurisdavidico movement founded by David Lazzaretti known as the “Prophet of Amiata” and for his presence in his campaigns in the Tibetan community Merigar West. The beauties of Arcidosso Dominating the historic center of Arcidosso is the Aldobrandesco castle built around the year 860 by the count family whose name it bears. In the doorposts of the fortress and on the walls there are some graffiti that according to some whisper stories of Templars. The Aldobrandesca fortress is also the seat of the Davide Lazzaretti Study Center, in which, through documents and representations of the face of the “Prophet of Amiata”, the mystery comes to life again and proposes itself to future generations. Another symbolic place of Arcidosso is the MACO: the museum of oriental art and culture. Reaching it is very simple just leave the fortress and enter the chancellery of the eighteenth-century palace in front of the fortress and in a moment you are catapulted into the Jokhang temple in Lhasa. MACO is the result of over 35 years of collaboration between the municipality of Arcidosso and the Dzogchen Community Cultural Association of Merigar. The project was born from the desire of both institutions to give light and find a home for the rich collection of over 5,000 oriental art objects and ethnographic artifacts from the Namkhai Collection.
